Heating prefabricated and timber-frame houses

Prefabricated and timber-frame houses are usually energy-efficient and of a sensible size. These are exactly the conditions in which electric underfloor heating works best: it is inexpensive to buy, needs no plant room or servicing, and installation usually takes one day.

Why electric underfloor heating

  • Low upfront cost: installing heating mats or cables costs a fraction of the price of a heat pump with plumbing and plant-room equipment.
  • No plant room: with no buffer tanks, pipes, circulation pumps or manifold cabinets, you keep valuable square metres in a small house, e.g. for a walk-in wardrobe or a pantry.
  • No servicing: there is no compressor, no moving parts and no mandatory inspections.
  • Quick installation: usually one day, at a date that fits the construction schedule.
  • Comfort: an even temperature throughout the room, a warm floor and no dust being stirred up.

Which system for which floor

Floor constructionSystemWhy
Concrete screed on insulation (foundation slab or floor slab with screed)WIS heating cablesheat storage, sole heat source, any floor finish
Existing screed or foundation slab without screed, tilesSPM heating mats or DCM-PRO cables2 mm in the tile adhesive, without raising the floor
Timber floor covered with OSB board, tilesSPM mats or DCM-PRO cablesinstalled in the adhesive or in a thin layer of self-levelling compound
Laminate or engineered wood boards laid dryWLFH heating film1 mm thick, on the underlay directly beneath the boards

We match the system to the construction and finish of the floor, not the other way round. If you have the house design from the manufacturer, send us the floor plan and we will propose a solution for each room.

When to plan the heating

Ideally at the design stage, before the house manufacturer fixes the floor layers. With the WIS system the cables are laid before the screed is poured, and with SPM mats and DCM-PRO cables before the tiles are laid. The electrician needs to prepare back boxes for the thermostats, the power supply and conduits for the sensors in advance.

We agree the installation date when the contract is signed. You pay a 10% deposit and the rest only after installation.

How much it costs to heat a small house with electricity

The annual cost depends on the heat demand from the design. At PLN 1.00/kWh incl. VAT, a 70 m² house with a demand of 50 kWh/m²/year needs about PLN 3,500 a year, and a passive house of the same size (30 kWh/m²/year) about PLN 2,100. Solar PV can lower these amounts.

In such houses, electric underfloor heating is usually cheaper than a heat pump over the entire service life. You will find the numbers in the 25-year cost comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Can underfloor heating be installed in a timber-frame house?

Yes. WIS heating cables are used on screed, SPM mats or DCM-PRO cables in tile adhesive on timber floors with OSB board, and WLFH heating film under laminate or wood boards.

Is electric heating enough to heat a prefabricated house?

In an energy-efficient or passive house, yes – it can be the only source of heat. We match the output to the heat demand from the design.

How long does it take to install underfloor heating in a prefabricated house?

Usually one day. We agree the date when the contract is signed, within a window that fits the construction schedule.

Do you install throughout Poland?

Yes, our installation teams fit Warmup heating throughout Poland.
